Lab School Recap

From Ms. Christine -

Rosalinda said that Scott said Holland had a rough night last night, but didn't show any signs of tiredness besides sitting down next to Rosalinda for a little bit when they were outside.  The goodbye in the morning went well and he didn't show any separation anxiety.  He's of course been signing, but he's been saying words (she says that he doesn't say whole words, but just the first sound) more these days.  She noticed it today when he was getting frustrated with getting the key in a steering wheel and asked for help.  We've noticed his verbalizations more at home too.  I know some of his words just say the first several sounds in the first syllable, but sometimes he'll say two syllable words too (ex. Chloe, Daddy, Mama/Mommy, bubble).  She tells him that if she's not looking, if he says a word, she can hear what he needs.  I'll explain that too occasionally, but I've found that children naturally gravitate towards spoken word as the way adults primarily communicate and also as a more effective way of communication, so I don't feel the need to push it.

They worked with stickers today and she said although Holland had a hard time taking the stickers off, and the stickers kept sticking onto his fingers, he worked with them for about 10 minutes.  She said that he was interested in playing with a shape sorter that made sounds when you put the correct shape in.  It was a popular item and the teachers have been working on having the children say "me next" and signing it by either patting their chest with one hand or two hands (I told her his sign for please is using one hand to rub his chest and his sign for help is patting his chest with two hands).  She said the sensory activity was digging with dirt today, and he participated in that.  He is also starting to follow a little with "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" during the small group time.
